On June 17, the official “ribbon-cutting” ceremony of the Vigneti Plastic Free supply-chain project took place, held as part of the third GreenChemCo Conference (Green Chemistry and Sustainable Coatings).
The wine-producing companies and the Department of Civil and Industrial Engineering of the University of Pisa participating in Vigneti Plastic Free are joining forces. The main objectives of the project are to find solutions to plastic dispersed in agriculture, and to define and obtain a Plastic Free certification for companies.
In particular, tying ties used for securing trunks and canes are under scrutiny as a source of micro- and nanoplastics that contaminate agricultural soils, accumulating year after year.
An interesting figure has emerged: it is estimated that up to 12 kg of plastic per hectare per year are dispersed into the soil solely due to the accidental breakage of ties, which fall to the ground and remain there, fragmenting as a result of solar radiation and mechanical soil operations.
